## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT HAD RECEIVED A WEATHER BRIEFING APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES BEFORE DEPARTURE AND WAS AWARE THAT IFR CONDITIONS WERE REPORTED TO BE PRESENT DURING THE INITIAL PORTION OF HIS FLIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED FROM DDC AND AT SOME POINT PRIOR TO IMPACTING THE GROUND, ENTERED IMC FLIGHT CONDITIONS. STRUCTURAL FAILURE OCCURRED AT SOME POINT PRIOR TO THE AIRCRAFT'S DESCENT FROM THE CLOUDS. EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT AN IN-FLIGHT FIRE DID OCCUR BUT IT IS UNKNOWN IF THE FIRE WAS PRESENT PRIOR TO THE IN-FLIGHT BREAKUP. AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT, THE PILOT DID NOT SUFFER FROM ANY KNOWN DISQUALIFYING MEDICAL CONDITIONS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI04FA215](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI04FA215), Aug 7, 2004: Jorgensen Velocity XL-RG (N190J), Belvidere, KS, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The non-instrument rated pilot's VFR flight into known instrument meteorological conditions and his failure to maintain aircraft control which resulted in an inverted flat spin, in-flight breakup,…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
