## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING A LOCAL AIRPLANE TOW GLIDER FLIGHT, THE PILOT DISCOVERED THAT HE WAS TOO FAR AWAY FROM HIS INTENDED POINT OF LANDING BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF SUFFICIENT THERMAL ACTIVITY. THE PILOT PICKED A GRASS FIELD BUT THEN DISCOVERED IT WAS A PLOWED AND DISKED FIELD SO HE CHANGED TO ANOTHER FIELD. DURING THE OFF FIELD LANDING THE GLIDER TOUCHED DOWN HARD CRACKING THE FUSELAGE AND DAMAGING THE LANDING GEAR. THE PILOT WAS THE ONLY OCCUPANT AND SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI04CA216](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI04CA216), Aug 8, 2004: Glasflugel H301 (N25KD), Hutchinson, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper decision to change the landing area at a low altitude and the inadequate flare that resulted in a hard landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
