## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT DEPARTED DANVILLE, IL ENROUTE TO CRYSTAL LAKE, IL IN CESSNA 182, N92848, ON AUGUST 23, 2004. THE ENGINE QUIT WHEN IN THE VICINITY OF THE DESTINATION AIRPORT. THE PILOT MADE AN OFF-AIRPORT LANDING. THE AIRPLANE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE, BUT THE PILOT--THE SOLE OCCUPANT--WAS NOT INJURED. NO FUEL WAS FOUND IN THE TANKS. THE LEFT FUEL CAP WAS NOT FOUND AT THE ACCIDENT SITE. IT WAS FOUND NEAR THE DEPARTURE AIRPORT IN A FIELD. THE PILOT DID NOT NOTICE THAT FUEL CONSUMPTION APPEARED TO BE ACCELERATED AS THE FUEL SIPHONED OUT OF THE OPEN TANK DURING FLIGHT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI04CA236](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI04CA236), Aug 23, 2004: Cessna 182 (N92848), Crystal Lake, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: Engine failure due to fuel exhaustion as a result of the pilot's failure to secure the left wing fuel cap during preflight. A factor was the trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
