## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) TWO AIRCRAFT COLLIDED IN FLIGHT WHILE PRACTICING AEROBATICS. THE PILOT OF EACH AIRPLANE WAS THE ONLY OCCUPANT OF THAT AIRCRAFT. THE PILOTS WERE PRACTICING AEROBATICS FOR A PLANNED AEROBATIC COMPETENCY DEMONSTRATION FLIGHT THE FOLLOWING DAY. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION INDICATES DURING THEIR PRACTICE ROUTINE, THE AIRCRAFT MADE CONTACT WITH ONE ANOTHER DURING A VERTICAL MANEUVER CAUSING AIRCRAFT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE AND POSSIBLY INJURIES FROM WHICH THE PILOTS WERE UNABLE TO RECOVER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX04FA304](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX04FA304), Aug 28, 2004: American Champion 8KCAB (N562ER), Prescott, AZ, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The failure of both pilots to maintain adequate clearance from each other while performing formation aerobatic maneuvers.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
