## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WITNESS STATED THAT AIRCRAFT APPEARED TO HAVE HAD MECHANICAL PROBLEMS ON THE WAY TO RUN UP AREA. RETURNED TO HANGAR FOR MAINTENANCE, AND DEPARTED SHORTLY AFTERWARD. OTHER WITNESS STATED THAT SHE SAW THE AIRCRAFT IN LEVEL FLIGHT, THEN WITNESSES IT IN DIVE TOWARD THE GROUND. (-23 AMENDMENT) POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED: THE LOWER PIECE OF THE TWO PIECE VENTURI WAS FOUND TO BE DISLODGED AND COCKED OVER TO ONE SIDE RESULTING IN INCONSISTENT FUEL VAPORIZATION, AND ALLOWING RAW FUEL TO TRAVEL TO THE CYLINDERS. IT APPEARS THE LOWER PIECE HAD BEEN LOOSE AND MOVING FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME AS INDICATED BY THE FRACTURED ENDS OF THE LEGS BEING CARBONED OVER. INSPECTION OF THE SPARK PLUGS REVEALED A FOULING CONDITION AND AN EXCESSIVELY RICH MIXTURE. THE MATING GASKET BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER BODY OF THE CARBURETOR WAS DISPLAYED IN TWO LOCATIONS AND SUCKED INWARD ALLOWING AIR TO ENTER THE CARBURETOR AT THE MATING SURFACES. EXCESSIVE SOOTING AND BLACKENING OF THE CARBURETOR THROAT AND DISCHARGE WAS NOTED UPON DISASSEMBLY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW04FA232](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW04FA232), Sep 4, 2004: Fairchild M-62A-3 (N79307), Corsicana, TX, substantial damage, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The loss of engine power due to a faulty carburetor and the pilot's failure to maintain airspeed sufficient for flight resulting in an inadvertent stall/spin during the forced landing after takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
