## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WHILE IN CRUISE-DESCENT TO FL210, RIGHT AFTER THE "EICAS" "ICING" CAPTION ILLUMINATED, THE COCKPIT AND CABIN FILLED UP WITH SMOKE AND SOOT. THE CAPTAIN DECLARED AN EMERGENCY, AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY IN ROA, VA. THE OXYGEN MASKS WERE NOT DEPLOYED, AND THERE WAS NO EMERGENCY EVACUATION. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF FIRE, AND NO IMMEDIATELY APPARENT SOURCE FOR THE SMOKE AND SOOT. MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL LATER DETERMINED THAT THE LEFT AIR CONDITIONING MACHINE (ACM) HAD SEIZED, CAUSING THE SMOKE AND SOOT. THE SYSTEM WAS DEFERRED, AND THE #1 ACM WAS LATER CHANGED AT A MAINTENANCE BASE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
