## Narrative

(-23) ON SEPTEMBER 27, 2004, AT 0645 EDT, AN EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR-BUILT COUGAR, N7803C REGISTERED TO BARRY H. SQUIRE, EXPERIENCED A MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSE WHILE TAXIING AT HIDDEN RIVER AIRPORT, SARASOTA, FLORIDA, FOR DEPARTURE TO FORT PIERCE, FLORIDA. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME AND NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED MINOR DAMAGE AND THE COMMERCIAL RATED PILOT WAS NOT INJURED. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED AT SARASOTA, FLORIDA ON SEPTEMBER 27, 2004 AT 1645 HOURS. THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR FAILED AND SEPARATED FROM ITS MOUNTING TUBE CAUSING THE RIGHT WING TIP TO SCRAPE THE TAXIWAY AND THE PROPELLER BLADE DAMAGE. THE GEAR LEG SUSTAINED METAL FATIGUE FAILURE THAT ORIGINATED AT THE OUTBOARD MOUNTING BOLT HOLE. THE HOLE WAS NOT BLENDED OR CHAMFERED DURING CONSTRUCTION. THE GEAR LEGS HAD BEEN REMOVED FOR INSPECTION AND PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE AT THE CONDITION INSPECTION 19 HOURS PRIOR. NO EVIDENCE OF CRACKS WERE NOTED AT THE INSPECTION.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
