## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WHILE AT CRUISE, DFW TO DCA, WITH NO PRIOR WARNING OR INDICATION, A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD AND FELT, FOLLOWED BY SEVERE VIBRATION OF THE #1 ENGINE, AND SMOKE IN THE CABIN. THE #1 ENGINE WAS SHUT DOWN, AND THE FLIGHT DIVERTED TO ROA, LANDING WITHOUT FURTHER ENGINE. ALL PASSENGERS AND CREW DEPLANED THROUGH THE MAIN CABIN DOOR, WITH NO INJURIES. MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL FOUND SUBSTANTIAL FOD DAMAGE TO THE #1 ENGINE, WHICH REQUIRED IT TO BE REPLACED. THE ONLY APPARENT SOURCE OF THE FOD WAS AN EXTERNALLY LEAKING FOWARD LAVATORY, WHICH PROBABLY RESULTED IN "BLUE ICE" ACCUMULATION BREAKING OFF THE FOWARD FUSELAGE, AND BEING INGESTED BY THE #1 ENGINE. THERE WAS NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT, AND NO EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING ELSE HAVING BEEN INGESTED BY THE ENGINE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
