## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N704KX DEPARTED EAST TEXAS REGIONAL AIRPORT WITHOUT ENOUGH FUEL TO FLY TO THE FIRST POINT OF INTENDED LANDING AND ASSUMING NORMAL CRUISING SPEED TO FLY AFTER THAT FOR AT LEAST 30 MIN IN VFR CONDITIONS. N704KX WAS ON A CFR PART 91 LOCAL FLIGHT ON THEIR WAY BACK TO EASY TX REGIONAL WHEN THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SPUTTER. THE (PIC) MR. ERIC ELLIS DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WEST OF THE FIELD AND WAS GIVEN PRIORITY TO LAND ON ANY RUNWAY. N704KX WAS 4 MILES WEST OF THE FIELD WHEN HE KNEW THEY WERE NOT GOING TO MAKE ANY RUNWAY AND DECIDED TO PUT IT DOWN IN A FIELD WEST OF EAST TX REGIONAL AIRPORT. UPON LANDING THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A TREE ON THE RIGHT WING CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE WING TIP AND AILERON. MR. ELLIS AND HIS PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DFW05LA023](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DFW05LA023), Nov 6, 2004: Cessna 150M (N704KX), Longview, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper inflight planning which resulted in a loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion. A factor was the lack of suitable terrain for the forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
