## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS ENROUTE FROM LUFKIN (LFK) TO COLLEGE STATION (CLL) DESCENDING FROM 5500 FEET TO 4500 FEET WHEN THE ENGINE IN HIS LONG-EZ, N234BW QUIT. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DAT^ EXECUTED AN OFF-AIRPORT LANDING APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES NE OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS (UTS) AIRPORT, NEAR ELLIS FARM ROAD AT THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, ELLIS UNIT. THE AIRCRAFT CAME DOWN TO REST UPSIDE DOWN IN AN EXTREMELY MUDDY FIELD, TRAPPING THE PILOT, WHO WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DAT^ USED HIS CELL PHONE TO CALL FOR HELP. THE AIRCRAFT WAS LOCATED BY TRIANGULATION FROM THE CELL PHONE COMPANY AND THE USE OF DPS HELICOPTER WHICH LOCATED THE ELT SIGNAL. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DAT^ WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL FOR MINOR WOUNDS AND TREATMENT FOR BEING COLD AND WET. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE FIXED LANDING GEAR WAS TWISTED WITHIN THE LOWER FUSELAGE, THE RIGHT WING WAS SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT, THE FORWARD WING (CANARD) WAS DISLODGED AND THE CANOPY SHATTERED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DFW05LA025](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DFW05LA025), Nov 25, 2004: Wingo Long-Ez (N234BW), Huntsville, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: Loss of engine power for undetermined reasons. A contributing factor was the unsuitable terrain for landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
