## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRMAN STATES HE WAS LANDING TO NORTHWEST ON A GRASS STRIP, AS HE HAD DONE MANY TIMES BEFORE. ALTHOUGH THE WIND WAS LIGHT AND VARIABLE, HE FELT THE AIRCRAFT SINK AS IF IN A WINDSHEAR. THE AIRMAN FAILED TO MAINTAIN AIRSPEED ON FINAL APPROACH. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE GROUND SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. THE LEFT MAIN GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE LEFT WING RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE PILOT WAS THE ONLY PERSON ON BOARD. HE WAS NOT INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC05CA023](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC05CA023), Nov 26, 2004: Piper PA-28-180 (N33061), Appomattox, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's misjudgment of distance and altitude.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
