## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON DECEMBER 2, 2004 AT 1324 EAST A CESSNA 421B, WAS DEPARTING ON RUNWAY 03 AT COLLEGEDALE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT ALTITUDE WAS BETWEEN 200 TO 300 FEET ON INITIAL CLIMB WHEN THE AIRCRAFT LOST POWER ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THE PILOT LOWERED THE NOSE TO GAIN AIRSPEED, THE ATP PASSENGER IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT STATED. HE OBSERVED TREES TO THEIR FRONT AND HE THOUGHT THE PILOT WAS TRYING TO MAKE A FORCED LANDING IN AN OPEN FIELD TO THEIR LEFT. THE ATP PASSENGER STATED JUST BEFORE THE AIRPLANE MADE CONTACT WITH THE TREES, THE RIGHT ENGINE WAS FEATHERED. THE AIRPLANE WAS DESTROYED AND HAD A POST CRASH FIRE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL05FA032](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL05FA032), Dec 2, 2004: Cessna 421B (N421SD), Apison, TN, destroyed, 5 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's improper identification of a partial loss of engine power on initial takeoff climb resulting in a collision with trees and the ground. A factor was a partial failure of the left engine…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
