## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 12/24/2004 AIRCRAFT N25UP DEPARTED ADS ENROUTE TO TXK. ON CLIMBOUT NOTED MARGINAL CLIMB PERFORMANCE. AFTER LEANING OUT, NOTICED AN UNCOMMANDED, SMOOTH INCREASE IN RPM TO 3500. UNRESPONSIVE TO PROP CONTROL, REDUCED THROTTLE WITH A VIOLENT SHAKING OF AIRCRAFT AND SMOKE COMING FROM ENGINE COWL. ASSUMED FIRE, AND CALLED MAYDAY. VECTORED TO ROCKWALL AIRPORT. COULD NOT MAKE ROCKWALL, AND LANDED IN A FIELD. INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT INDICATED THAT THE NUMBER 2 ROD FAILED, CAME THROUGH THE CRANKCASE, AND KNOCKED THE L/H MAGNETO OFF MOUNT. ENGINE WAS SHUT DOWN PRIOR TO LANDING. LANDING GEAR AND FLAPS WERE NOT LOWERED. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED IN A MUDDY SNOW COVERED FIELD, WITH MINOR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
