## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON THE AFTERNOON OF 01-17-2005 THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DA^ (PILOT IN COMMAND) PREFLIGHTED N9JY IN PREPARATION OF A LOCAL AREA FLIGHT. THE START AND RUN-UP WERE UNEVENTFUL AND THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ DEPARTED THE AIRSTRIP. WHILE CLIMBING THROUGH 1000 FT. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ HEARD AN ENGINE KNOCKING SOUND AND THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE SHOWED VERY LOW PRESSURE. THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN VERY ROUGH AND WITHIN SECONDS STOPPED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS TURNED NORTH TOWARD THE ONLY OPEN FIELD. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ REALIZED HE COULD NOT MAKE THE FIELD AND PREPARED FOR A LANDING IN THE TREES. THE AIRCRAFT WENT INTO THE TREES AND CAME TO REST APPROXIMATELY 5 FT. OFF THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT WAS HUNG UP IN THE TREES. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ UNBUCKLED HIS SEATBELT AND EXITED THE AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ DID NOT SUFFER ANY INJURY IN THE ACCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL05LA047](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL05LA047), Jan 17, 2005: Beech C-23 (N9JY), Roseboro, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The overload fracture of the engine oil cooler for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
