## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON FEBRUARY 6, 2005 A STUDENT PILOT WAS DOING A CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT FROM KAHULUI TO HANA, HE LANDED IN HANA AND THEN DEPARTED HANA AND WAS STARTING TO CLIMB TO 2500 FT. AS HE CLIMBED THROUGH 2,200 FT THE ENGINE STARTED TO RUN ROUGH AND THE COWLING BEGAN TO VIBRATE. THE STUDENT PILOT VERIFIED THE FUEL LEVER WAS IN THE ON POSITION AND HIS THROTTLE WAS AT FULL POWER. HE DID CHECKS ON THE ENGINE BUT IT CONTINUED TO RUN ROUGH, THEN HE NOTIFIED THE MAUI TOWER THAT HE WAS EXPERIENCING ENGINE TROUBLES, HE LOOKED FOR A FIELD ALONG THE COAST WHERE HE COULD LAND THE AIRCRAFT. HE BROADCAST THAT HE WOULD BE LANDING IN A FIELD ABOUT 1 MILE EAST OF WAILUA POINT, HE SET UP FOR LANDING, ON HIS BASE TURN THE ENGINE STOPPED PRODUCING POWER. ON FINAL APPROACH HE WAS HIGH, LANDED THE LAST 1/5 OF THE FIELD, THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED THEN TOUCHED DOWN AGAIN AT A FENCE BY THE TREE LINE OF THE FIELD.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX05LA087](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX05LA087), Feb 6, 2005: Cessna 152 (N7332L), Hana, HI, substantial damage. Probable cause: Foreign object damage inside an engine cylinder, which resulted in a loss of engine power during climb to cruise, and an off-airport forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
