## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING INFLIGHT MANEUVERING ON AN INITIAL CHIEF FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR CHECK RIDE, N16554'S ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN ROUGH. WITHIN 5 SECONDS THE VIBRATIONS WERE SO SEVERE, THAT INSPECTOR ^PRIVAC^ SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN. HE TERMINATED THE CHECK RIDE, AND WITH THE PILOT'S ^PRIVAC^ HELP HANDLED CHECK LIST PROCEDURES, AND SELECTED A FORCED LANDING SITE. AT 3000 FEET IN A PA-28R-200 THEY HAD THREE MINUTES TO LAND. HE PICKED A WINTER WHEAT FIELD, WITH APPROXIMATELY 600 FEET OF USABLE LANDING AREA, 40 FOOT HIGH TREES AT THE APPROACH END, AND A ROAD AT THE OTHER END. WITH THE PILOT'S ^PRIVAC^ ASSISTANCE, ^PRIVAC^ ALERTED EASTON UNICOM ON 122.95, HAD THEM CALL 911, AND COMPLETED SHUT DOWN PROCEDURES. THEY LANDED AND STOPPED 90 FEET FROM THE ROAD WITH NO DAMAGE TO THEMSELVES OR THE AIRPLANE. GROUND CHECK OF THE ENGINE SHOWED 6 QUARTS OIL/PROP VERY DIFFICULT TO PULL THROUGH.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
