## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING SURVEILLANCE AT WILLIAMS GATEWAY AIRPORT (IWA) IN MESA AZ, ON JULY 6, 2005, I NOTICED THE LEFT WING OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS DAMAGED SEVERELY. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ AND HIS STUDENT HAD FLOWN THE AIRCRAFT ON MARCH 11, 2005. HOWEVER, THEY STATED THAT SHORTLY AFTER LIFT OFF THEY HAD A BAD GEAR INDICATION LIGHT. THE PILOT ^PRIVA^ AND ^PRIVACY D^ RETURNED TO IWA AND LANDED SAFELY. THE DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING WAS SUBSTANTIAL AND REQUIRED THE WING TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS NOT REPORTED TO THE FAA NOR THE NTSB.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX05LA227](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX05LA227), Mar 11, 2005: Piper PA-28R-200 (N2882R), Phoenix, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: substantial damage to the airplane during an unknown phase of flight for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
