## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON MARCH 14, 2005, N226PS, A SUKHOI EXPERIMENTAL ACROBATIC AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED ENGINE PROBLEMS WHILE PRACTICING LANDINGS AT MARANA AIRPORT. THE PILOT EXECUTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING AND CAME TO REST INVERTED IN A FIELD JUST OFF THE AIRPORT CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS DEPLETED OF FUEL AND THE ENGINE WOULD RUN NORMAL WHEN FUEL WAS ADDED. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE SHOULD HAVE HAD ENOUGH FUEL TO MAKE IT TO THE AIRPORT WHEN THE ENGINE QUIT. THE AIRCRAFT DOES NOT HAVE A FUEL GAUGE, HOWEVER, THE PILOT STATED THAT THE TANK WAS FULL PRIOR TO TAKEOFF FOR A LOCAL ACROBATIC FLIGHT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX05LA115](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX05LA115), Mar 14, 2005: Sukhoi SU-26 (N226PS), Tucson, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's inadequate in-flight planning and fuel consumption calculations, which resulted in fuel exhaustion.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
