## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRPLANE ENCOUNTERED A MIST ABOUT 30 MILES FROM THE DESTINATION AIRPORT AT AN ALTITUDE OF 4000 FEET; THE PILOT NOTED THAT THE TEMPERATURE WAS 35-36 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE ENGINE QUIT, THE PILOT ELECTED TO PERFORM A FORCED LANDING ON A HIGHWAY, JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN THE ENGINE SURGED THEN STOPPED AGAIN. DURING THE LANDING ROLLOUT, THE RIGHT WING TIP AND LEFT WING IMPACTED TWO HIGHWAY SIGNS AND SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGING THE AIRCRAFT. ONCE THE AIRCRAFT WAS MOVED FROM A SHALLOW DITCH TO LEVEL GROUND, THE ENGINE STARTED ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT AND RAN AT IDLE RPM.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD05LA045](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD05LA045), Mar 16, 2005: Cessna 152 (N64986), Port Royal, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to the pilot's inadequate preflight planning which resulted in fuel exhaustion.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
