## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DAT^ RADIOED HIS LANDING APPROACH AT APPROXIMATE 16:00 LOCAL TIME. UPON FINAL APPROACH HE ATTEMPTED TO LINE UP WITH THE CENTERLINE; HOWEVER A CROSSWIND CAUSED THE PLANE TO DRIFT TO THE LEFT. THE PILOT ^PRIVAC^ ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT FOR THE COURSE DEVIATION AND POWERED UP, BUT CONTINUED TO DRIFT LEFT. HE SAW THE TREES AND DETERMINED THAT HE WOULD BE UNABLE TO ABORT LANDING AND FLY OVER THE TREELINE. THE PILOT ^PRIVAC^ THEN DITCHED THE PLANE IN THE GRASS. THE AIRCRAFT TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 266 FEET TO AN INITIAL IMPACT LOCATION AND TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 214 FEET MORE BEFORE COMING TO REST AT THE TREE LINE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD05CA056](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD05CA056), Apr 16, 2005: Diamond Aircraft Industries DA40 (N127X), Leesburg, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control. Factors contributing to the accident were the pilots lack of experience, and the uphill terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
