## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON APRIL 19, 2005, THE PILOT OF A BEECHCRAFT, N299X, WAS ENROUTE ON AN IFR FLIGHT PLAN FROM VAN NUYS (VNY) AIRPORT TO REID HILLVIEW (RHV) AIRPORT. THE PILOT STATED THAT THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN ROUGH AND A FEW MINUTES LATER THE CABIN STARTED TO FILL WITH WHITE SMOKE. THE PILOT CONTACTED OAKLAND CENTER AND REQUESTED VECTORS TO PASO ROBLES (PRB) AIRPORT. ON THE DESCENT AND APPROXIMATELY 6 TO 8 MILES FROM THE AIRPORT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE COWLING POPPED OPEN. AS THE PILOT WAS APPROACHING THE AIRPORT, HE DECIDED THAT HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE THE RUNWAY AND STARTED A LEFT HAND TURN TO LOOK FOR AN OPEN FIELD. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED IN A VINEYARD APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE FROM PASO ROBLES AIRPORT.
