## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) FLIGHT CREW HEARD LOUD BANG WHEN RETRACTION WAS ATTEMPTED. NOSE LANDING GEAR WOULD NOT LOCK UP. LANDING GEAR WAS PLACED BACK INTO THE DOWN POSITION. GOT THREE GREEN LIGHTS. AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO DENVER, LANDING WITHOUT INCIDENT. MAINTENANCE FOUND THE NLG RETRACT ACTUATOR BROKEN AND THE ROD END PULLED OUT OF THE ACTUATOR. ROD END HAD FALLEN AND THE MOVEMENT OF THE GEAR CAUSED PENETRATION OF THE WHEEL WELL BULKHEAD. AIRCRAFT WAS FERRIED TO ATL FOR REPAIRS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN05LA077](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN05LA077), May 14, 2005: McDonnell Douglas MD-88 (N949DL), Denver, CO, substantial damage. Probable cause: the failure of the nose gear actuator resulted in penetration of the forward pressure bulkhead and a loss of pressurization.

## Other reports on N949DL (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19920320016819I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920320016819I), Mar 20, 1992: Doug MD88 (N949DL), Baton Rouge, LA. Unsafe gear indication at start of approach. Safe indication prior to landing. Landed safely.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
