## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JUNE 10, 2005 AT APPROXIMATELY 1730 MDT, AN AIRBUS A-319-114, 302NB, OPERATED BY NORTHWEST AIRLINES, FLIGHT 563, ENCOUNTERED TURBULENCE THAT RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY TO A FLIGHT ATTENDANT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ENROUTE FROM MSP TO DEN AT FL 340 IN A FAIRLY THICK BAND OF CIRRUS CLOUDS. THE PILOT HAD SLOWED THE AIRCRAFT TO MACH .76 DUE TO LIGHT TURBULENCE. THE SEAT BELT SIGN WAS ON AND AN ANNOUNCEMENT HAD BEEN MADE TO THE PASSENGERS TO REMAIN IN THEIR SEATS WITH THEIR SEAT BELTS FASTENED. THE PILOT HAD NOT INSTRUCTED THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS TO BE SEATED. ABOUT 50 MINUTES BEFORE ARRIVAL IN DEN, THE AIRCRAFT EXITED THE CIRRUS CLOUDS AND THE PILOT IMMEDIATELY SAW THE TOP OF A THUNDERSTORM DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE STORM WAS NOT PAINTING ON THE RADAR. THE PILOT IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A TURN TO MANEUVER AROUND THE WEATHER, BUT ENCOUNTERED MODERATE TO SEVERE TURBULENCE AS HE WENT AROUND IT. A FLIGHT ATTENDANT WAS THROWN TO THE CEILING THEN HIT THE CART AND FELL TO THE FLOOR, BREAKING TWO RIBS, INJURING HIS ARM AND CAUSING SOME INTERNAL INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
