## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ENROUTE FROM TOPEKA, KS (FOE) ENROUTE TO TUSCALOOSA, AL (TCL) AND DURING CLIMB THROUGH FL230 OR FL240 TOWARD ASSIGNED ALTITUDE OF FL270, A MODERATE AMOUNT OF SMOKE BEGAN TO APPEAR IN THE COCKPIT AND CABIN. THE CREW NOTIFIED ATC, DECLARED AN EMERGENCY, AND REQUESTED LOWER ALTITUDE. THE CO-PILOT INITIATED THE CHECKLIST FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SMOKE. WHEN RH WAS SELECTED ON THE PRESSURE SOURCE SELECTOR THE SMOKE GRADUALLY BEGAN TO DISSIPATE. WHEN LE WAS SELECTED ON THE PRESSURE SOURCE SELECTOR SMOKE BEGAN TO APPEAR AGAIN. THE RH POSITION WAS IMMEDIATELY SELECTED AGAIN. THE SMOKE THEN CLEARED AND NO ADDITIONAL SMOKE OCCURRED DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE FLIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO FOE AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF ILL EFFECTS FROM THE SMOKE WITH REGARD TO THE CREW OR PASSENGERS.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
