(-23) DURING INITIAL TAKEOFF ROLL, THERE WAS A FAINT SMELL OF SMOKE, FOLLOWED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY BY A THIN, BUT RAPIDLY BUILDING, SMOKE BUILDUP IN THE COCKPIT. TAKEOFF WAS ABORTED AT ROUGHLY 50 KNOTS. ONCE THEY COMPLETED THE ABORTED TAKEOFF, THE SMOKE BEGAN TO DISSIPATE AND THERE WAS NO SIGNS OF CONTINUED BUILDUP ONCE THE ENGINE POWER WAS RETARDED. THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT INFORMED THE COCKPIT CREW THAT SHE HAD BOTH SMELLED AND VISUALLY CONFIRMED THE PRESENCE OF SMOKE IN THE CABIN BUT COULD NOT READILY IDENTIFY A SOURCE. THE PASSENGERS WERE EVACUATED ON THE RUNWAY THROUGH THE MAIN CABIN DOOR ONLY. MAINTENANCE TROUBLESHOT THE DISCREPANCY BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. MAINTENANCE INDICATED THIS PROBLEM HAD OCCURRED ON OTHER AIRCRAFT OF THIS TYPE IN THEIR FLEET ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHEREIN THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
