## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT DEPARTED HIS PRIVATE AIRPORT (TURF RUNWAY) FOR A LOCAL FLIGHT. THE FUEL SELECTOR WAS PLACED IN THE LEFT TANK SELECTION. THE SELECTOR WAS NOT FULLY SEATED IN THE LEFT POSITION. AT APPROXIMATELY 300 TO 400 FEET OF ALTITUDE, THE ENGINE QUIT. THE PILOT MADE A LEFT TURN INTO AN OPEN FIELD. ON TOUCHDOWN, THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED, AND THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED ON IT'S BACK. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED. UPON EXAMINATION, THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF ANY SYSTEM FAILURE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO PERSONAL OR PROPERTY. THE RIGHT FUEL TANK CONTAINED AUTOMOTIVE FUEL. THE AIRCRAFT DOES NOT HAVE AN STC FOR AUTOMOTIVE FUEL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD05LA113](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD05LA113), Jul 24, 2005: Piper PA-22-150 (N3818P), Chatham, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to ensure that the fuel selector valve was properly engaged, which resulted in fuel starvation and subsequent loss of engine power.

## Other reports on N3818P (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19790507026219I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19790507026219I), May 7, 1979: Piper PA22150 (N3818P), Redwood, VA, Minor damage. Za power loss in flight. Exhaust valve stuck open due to carbon deposit.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
