## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 1, 2005 ABOUT 0940 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME, N5495 A GRUMMAN G-164A, BEING OPERATED BY 1ST STATE AERIAL APPLICATIONS WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED DURING AN EMERGENCY LANDING WHEN IT'S ENGINE FAILED. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DAT^ STATED TAHT HE WAS RETURNING TO A PRIVATE AIRSTRIP AFTER A 25 MINUTE AERIAL APPLICATION FLIGHT AT ABOUT 500 FEET AGL, WHEN HE HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION FROM THE ENGINE. HE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN LOOKING FOR A SUITABLE FIELD TO PERFORM AN EMERGENCY LANDING, FEELING HEAT AND SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE. HE LOCATED A SOYBEAN FIELD TO THE RIGHT AND MADE A RIGHT TURN IN AN ATTEMPT TO GLIDE TO THE FIELD. THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO STALL SO HE LOWERED THE NOSE AND WAS DESCENDING RAPIDLY; BEFORE HE COULD LEVEL THE WINGS, THE RIGHT WING TIP CONTACTED THE GROUND LIGHTLY. THE AIRCRAFT PROPELLER THEN STRUCK THE GROUND CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO FLIP OVER ONTO ITS BACK AND CAME TO REST APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET FROM THE INITIAL IMPACT SITE. THE PILOT IMMEDIATELY EXITED THE AIRCRAFT, WITHOUT INJURY. NO POST CRASH FIRE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC05LA126](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC05LA126), Aug 1, 2005: Grumman G-164A (N5495), Felton, DE, substantial damage. Probable cause: The mechanic's inadequate annual inspection, and failure to comply with an airworthiness directive, which resulted in a total failure of the second stage turbine rotor.

## Other reports on N5495 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19870213002879A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19870213002879A), Feb 13, 1987: Scwzer G164A (N5495), Hazen, AR, Destroyed. Struck powerlines on final approach to airstrip. Did not see powerlines.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
