## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) STUDENT PILOT ON HIS 3RD SOLO CROSS COUNTRY FUELED HIS OWN AIRCRAFT AT HOQUIAM. PILOT HAD NEVER FUELED AN AIRCRAFT BEFORE. AFTER FUELING THE AIRCRAFT, THE STUDENT PILOT NOT HAVING ANY REFERENCE VIA CENTERLINE MARKINGS FROM THE FUELING STATION TO THE ACTIVE TAXIWAY, MISJUDGED HIS POSITION AND STRUCK A FENCE POST WITH THE AIRCRAFTS LEFT WING. THE MID SECTION OF THE LEADING EDGE OF THE LEFT WING WAS DAMAGED BY THE FENCE POST. THE AIRCRAFT THEN PIVOTED WITH THE AIRCRAFTS PROPELLER AND LEFT AILERON IMPACTING THE FENCE. THE AIRCRAFT PROPELLER BECAME IMBEDDED INTO THE METAL CHAIN LINK FENCE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA05CA159](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA05CA159), Aug 4, 2005: Cessna 172M (N724TM), Hoquiam, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from a fence. The fence was a factor.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
