## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT WAS CIRCLING A LAKE CABIN A SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE AIRPORT, THEN PROCEEDED TOWARD THE AIRPORT TO LAND. HE WAS ON A CLOSE-IN DOWNWIND APPROACH AT A LOW ALTITUDE WHEN HE ATTEMPTED A SHARP 180 DEGREE TURN TO FINAL. THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 100 DEGREES. THE AIRCRAFT WAS OBSERVED TO MAKE A STEEP BANKED 180 DEGREE LEFT TURN TO FINAL WHEN IT ABRUPTLY DESCENDED LEFT WING LOW (CHARACTERISTIC OF AN ACCELERATED STALL) AND COLLIDED WITH TREES AND THE TERRAIN APPROXIMATELY 200 YARDS SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. WITNESSES REPORTED HEARING THE SOUND OF THE ENGINE DURING THE ENTIRE MANEUVER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA05LA162](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA05LA162), Aug 5, 2005: Harmon/Lance RV-4 (N683RV), Coolin, ID, substantial damage, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from trees while maneuvering to base leg for landing. Trees and inadequate in-flight planning were factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
