## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRCRAFT WAS ON A FLIGHT FROM KRHV TO E45 UNDER VFR AND THE PILOT (SOLE OCCUPANT) HAD STARTED A DESCENT FOR LANDING. APPROXIMATELY 6 MILES FROM THE E45, THE ENGINE FAILED AND THE PILOT LANDED IN A FIELD APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES SHORT OF THE AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED GEAR UP AND STRUCK FENCE POSTS CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE LEADING EDGES OF BOTH WINGS. THE PILOT WAS UNINJURED. THE PILOT ADVISED THE FAA INVESTIGATOR THAT THE AIRCRAFT HAD RUN OUT OF GAS. HE STATED THAT HE MISCALCULATED HIS FUEL BURN WHEN PLANNING THE FLIGHT AND THE ACTUAL FUEL BURN OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS HIGHER THAN EXPECTED RESULTING IN FUEL EXHAUSTION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX05LA267](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX05LA267), Aug 14, 2005: Barnes Lancair Legacy (N508DB), Groveland, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The inaccurate fuel quantity sensors and the pilot's failure to verify the fuel quantity on board prior to takeoff, which resulted in fuel exhaustion.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
