## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON APPROACH FOR LANDING TO RUNWAY 35, THE PILOT REALIZED THAT HE HAD ENCOUNTERED A DOWNDRAFT, AND ADDED POWER TO MAKE IT TO THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT CONTACTED THE GROUND IN A NOSE-UP ATTITUDE SHORT OF THE RUNWAY CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT INCLUDING LANDING GEAR, WINGS, PROPELLER, AND CABIN AREA OF THE FUSELAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC05CA135](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC05CA135), Aug 21, 2005: Piper PA-24-180 (N6617P), Hancock, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for wind conditions, which resulted in the airplane impacting the ground. A factor in the accident was the downdraft wind condition, as reported by the pilot.

## Other reports on N6617P (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19800822066119I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19800822066119I), Aug 22, 1980: Piper PA24 (N6617P), Albuquerque, NM, Minor damage. Pilot failed to extend the landing gear.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
