## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) SEVERAL MINUTES AFTER DEPARTING BOWMAN FIELD, LIVERMORE FALLS, ME, (B10), AIRCRAFT WAS REPORTED CIRCLING A RESIDENCE BELIEVED TO BE HIS DAUGHTER'S HOUSE. WITNESSES STATED THE ENGINE "RAN ROUGH" FOR SEVERAL SECONDS AND THEN STOPPED COMPLETELY. PILOT APPEARED TO BE GLIDING TOWARDS AN APPLE ORCHARD FOR AN OFF-FIELD LANDING WHEN LEFT WINGTIP CAME INTO CONTACT WITH THE TRUNK OF A PINE TREE. AIRCRAFT SPUN VIOLENTLY TO THE LEFT AND IMPACTED THE GROUND IN AN ALMOST VERTICAL ATTITUDE, NOSE FIRST. PILOT WAS KILLED IMMEDIATELY ON IMPACT. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION YIELDED A FUEL STRAINER FULL OF DEBRIS AND LITTLE EVIDENCE OF FUEL IN THE WING TANKS. NO EVIDENCE OF FUEL LEAKAGE WAS FOUND AT THE CRASH SITE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC05FA138](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC05FA138), Aug 27, 2005: Cessna 172C (N1680Y), Winthrop, ME, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate preflight inspection, which resulted in a loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion, and a subsequent forced landing and impact with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
