## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT, A STUDENT CONDUCTING HIS FIRST SOLO FLIGHT IN THIS MODEL GLIDER, STATED HIS CANOPY OPENED WHILE IN FLIGHT. HE HELD THE CANOPY CLOSED WITH ONE HAND THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE FLIGHT. THE STUDENT STATED THAT ON HIS LANDING ON RUNWAY 30 AT MEV HE RELEASED THE CANOPY TO DEPLOY THE SPOILERS AT 10 FEET. WITNESSES STATED THAT THE GLIDER THEN HIT HARD AND BOUNCED UP PITCHING UP TO NEAR THE VERTICAL AND REACHING A HEIGHT OF 100 TO 200 FEET. IT THEN TURNED RIGHT AND THE NOSE DROPPED DOWN SHARPLY. THE AIRCRAFT SUBSEQUENTLY FLARED AT APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET OVER A RAMP AREA WITH SEVERAL GLIDERS PARKED ON IT. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO SINK, STRIKING TWO UNOCCUPIED GLIDERS AND THEN TURNING 90 DEGREES TO THE LEFT AS IT SLID TO A STOP. THE GLIDER RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO BOTH FUSELAGE AND WINGS. ONE GLIDER PARKED ON THE RAMP RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE; THE OTHER PARKED GLIDER RECEIVED MINOR DAMAGE. THE SOLE OCCUPANT RECEIVED SEVERE INJURIES. WINDS WERE LIGHT AND VARIABLE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX05LA281](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX05LA281), Aug 29, 2005: Burkhart Grob Flugzeugbau G102 Club Astir Iiib (N925G), Minden, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: the student pilot's failure to ensure that the canopy was properly latched prior to departure. The inadequate supervision of the flight by the instructor and flight school was also causal.

## Other reports on N925G (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19890715028739A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890715028739A), Jul 15, 1989: Grob G102ASTIR (N925G), Maricopa, AZ, Substantial damage. Canopy came open on tow. Rope broke from drag. Pilot made 180 and landed hard on same runway. No latch defects.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
