## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT WERE PERFORMING AEROBATIC MANEUVERS OVER THE OCEAN NEAR CATALINA ISLAND. THE AIRCRAFT ENTERED AN INADVERTENT SPIN. THE INSTRUCTOR WAS UNABLE TO RECOVER FROM THE SPIN. AT ABOUT 2500 FT AGL HE TOLD THE STUDENT THEY MUST BAIL OUT AND JETTISONED THE AIRCRAFT CANOPY. THE STUDENT BAILED OUT WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY. HE STATED THAT HE BELIEVES HIS PARACHUTE CANOPY FULLY DEPLOYED ABOUT 1000 FEET ABOVE THE WATER. HE STATED THAT WHILE DESCENDING HE OBSERVED THE INSTRUCTOR IN THE WATER WITH HIS PARACHUTE PARTIALLY DEPLOYED. THE PARACHUTE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN PACKED PROPERLY AND FROM EXAMINATION BY A CERTIFIED PARACHUTE RIGGER, IT APPEARS THAT THE INSTRUCTOR PULLED THE D-RING IN AN ATTEMPT TO DEPLOY THE PARACHUTE BUT IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THERE WAS SUFFICIENT ALTITUDE FOR THE PARACHUTE TO FULLY DEPLOY.
