## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WHILE AT CRUISE, THE PILOT SUDDENLY EXPERIENCED ENGINE ROUGHNESS AND SHAKING OF THE ENGINE COWLING. HE MADE AN APPROACH TO KUTZTOWN AIRPORT ON RUNWAY 35, BUT DECIDED TO GO-AROUND BECAUSE HE WAS TOO HIGH. HE MADE A RIGHT CLIMB AT REDUCED POWER OF 2100 RPM AND APPROACHED RUNWAY 35 ONCE AGAIN. HE TOUCHED DOWN AT APPROXIMATELY 80 KNOTS ON THE GRASS ADJACENT TO THE HARD SURFACE RUNWAY, AT A POINT APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET FROM THE FAR END OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT RAN OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY AND ACROSS THE ROAD. THE LEFT WING STRUCK A TELEPHONE POLE AND SPUN THE AIRCRAFT 90 DEGREES TO THE LEFT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED JUST SHORT OF A HOUSE ON THE LAWN IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD05LA130](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD05LA130), Sep 2, 2005: Cessna 172S (N972SP), Kutztown, PA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to attain a proper touchdown point as a result of the airplane's excessive airspeed. A factor was the partial loss of engine power due to a seized exhaust valve.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
