## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRCRAFT MADE AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION. THE PILOT STATED THAT THE FUEL GAUGES SHOWED 1/4 IN EACH TANK BEFORE HE DEPARTED FOR A SHORT FLIGHT TO CHARGE THE BATTERY. APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES SOUTH OF THE AIRPORT THE ENGINE SPUTTERED TWICE AND QUIT. BOTH TANKS INDICATED EMPTY. THE PILOT CHOSE TO LAND IN AN OPEN FIELD AND BEGAN THE APPROACH. ON TOUCHDOWN, THE NOSE DUG INTO A BURROW AND THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED. THE PILOT WAS TREATED FOR MINOR INJURIES AND RELEASED. THE ON SCENE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT HAVE ANY FUEL IN EITHER TANK. ALL FLIGHT AND ENGINE CONTROLS HAD FULL CONTINUITY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL05CA157](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL05CA157), Sep 4, 2005: Cessna 172F (N5320R), Haleyville, AL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilots inadequate preflight of the fuel tank resulting in a total loss of engine power in cruise flight due to fuel exhaustion, resulting in a forced landing, and nose over on landing roll out.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
