## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE SUBJECT AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE SHUT DOWN AFTER APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES OF FLIGHT. AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A HILLSIDE FARM FIELD RESULTED IN THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPING OVER AFTER TOUCHING DOWN. THE PILOT RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED WHEN IT CAME TO REST INVERTED, CRUSHING THE COCKPIT CANOPY. THE AIRCRAFT FUSELAGE AFT OF THE COCKPIT BROKE APART. THE RIGHT WING AND LEFT CANARD SEPARATED FROM THE FUSELAGE. DURING THE INVESTIGATION THE ENGINE WAS OPERATED FOR 3 MINUTES AND MAGNETOS TESTED GOOD AT 1700 RPM. FUEL SCREENS IN BOTH FUEL TANKS WERE COVERED WITH A FINE, MUDDY SILT, RESTRICTING THE FUEL FLOW. NEITHER FUEL TANK HAD A STAND-PIPE PROVISION, BUT FED FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE TANKS. THIS IS LIKELY CAUSING FUEL STARVATION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD05LA147](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD05LA147), Sep 4, 2005: Hanson VariEze (N220EZ), New Cumberland, PA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The owner/builder's inadequate fuel tank inspection during construction, which resulted in fuel contamination and subsequent fuel starvation to the engine.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
