## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD BEEN PRACTICING TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS IN THE PIRU PRACTICE AREA ON THE RIVER BED WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. HE STATED THAT HE HAD LANDED AND THEN LIFTED OFF AND TAXIED TO THE RIGHT, POSITIONING FOR THE NEXT TAKEOFF. WHILE MOVING TO THE RIGHT, THE RIGHT SKID CONTACTED WET SAND, DUG IN AND CAUSED THE HELICOPTER TO TIP TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE APPLIED LEFT CYCLIC AND THEN MADE THE MISTAKE OF INCREASING COLLECTIVE IN AN ATTEMPT TO CLEAR THE OBSTRUCTION. THE HELICOPTER THEN ROLLED OVER AND IMPACTED THE GROUND ON IT'S RIGHT SIDE. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE THEN SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN, TURNED OFF THE FUEL SELECTOR VALVE AND EXITED THE HELICOPTER. AN ON-SITE EXAMINATION OF THE WRECKAGE SUPPORTED THE PILOTS STATEMENTS. THE HELICOPTER WAS FOUND RESTING ON IT'S RIGHT SIDE. THE RIGHT SKID WAS FOUND EMBEDDED IN THE SAND. THE ROTOR BLADES EXHIBITED DAMAGE CONSISTENT WITH GROUND CONTACT DUE TO DYNAMIC ROLLOVER. THE TAIL ROTOR AND VERTICAL STABILIZERS, AS WELL AS THE TAIL BOOM, WERE UNDAMAGED. THE ENGINE AND FUEL SYSTEM HAD BEEN SECURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX05CA291](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX05CA291), Sep 8, 2005: Robinson R22 (N8348T), Santa Clarita, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's improper use of the collective control while attempting to free the right skid, which induced a dynamic rollover.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
