## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT STATES IT WAS A GUSTY WIND DAY. AFTER SIGHSEEING OVER DRUMMOND ISLAND, PILOT DECIDED TO LAND ON A BAY NORTHEAST OF THE ISLAND, WHICH HE HAD BEEN TO NUMEROUS TIMES. AS PILOT DESCENDED BELOW THE TREE LINE, HE EXPERIENCED BUFFETING OF THE WING, FOLLOWED BY A DOWNDRAFT. HE TRIED TO HOLD THE FLOATS OFF THE WATER, BUT THE RIGHT FLOAT HIT THE WATER RATHER HARD SENDING THE PLANE INTO A PORPOISING MOTION, VEERING RIGHT TOWARD SHORE. AS HE APPROACHED THE SHORE, THE PILOT PULLED BACK ON THE STICK TO GET THE FRONT OF THE FLOATS UP. AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST UPSIDE DOWN ON THE SHORE. PILOT AND PASSENGER DEPARTED AIRCRAFT WITH NO INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI05CA265](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI05CA265), Sep 11, 2005: Aviat A-1B (N7QR), Drummond Island, MI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to adequately compensate for the wind conditions, his failure to perform a go-around, and he flared improperly. Factors included the downdraft and the shoreline.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
