## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT SAID HE DEPARTED THE SPANISH FORK AIRPORT ON A FLIGHT TO EVALUATE THE NEED TO INSTALL A RUDDER TRIM TAB ON THE EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT AND ALSO TO ACQUIRE MORE TIME ON THE AIRCRAFT THAT WOULD ALLOW HIM TO HAVE THE FLIGHT AREA RESTRICTION REMOVED. UPON RETURNING TO THE SPANISH FORK AIRPORT AND ENTERING A DOWNWIND LEG FOR RUNWAY 30, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO STUTTER. HE SAID HE SWITCHED TO THE LEFT FUEL TANK, BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO STUTTER AND HE SWITCHED BACK TO "BOTH" TANKS. TO KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING HE HAD TO HAVE THE THROTTLE SETTING QUIT HIGH. WHEN HE GOT DOWN READY TO LAND, THE AIRCRAFT WAS STILL DEVELOPING A LOT OF SPEED AND HE OVERSHOT THE RUNWAY AND ENDED UP IN AN OPEN FIELD ABOUT 1 MILE BEYOND RUNWAY 30. THE AIRCRAFT DIDN'T FINALLY GET STOPPED UNTIL IT ENCOUNTERED A DITCH. THIS IS A FINAL REPORT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN05CA144](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN05CA144), Sep 13, 2005: Bradford Haines Glastar (N46289), Spanish Fork, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to strain the fuel prior to flight resulting in fuel starvation. Contributing to the accident was the loss of engine power due to the plugged fuel filter.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
