## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON OCT. 2, 2005, ABOUT 1930 AK DAYLIGHT TIME N9950X, PILOTED BY ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ COLLIDED WITH THE TERRAIN DURING AN EMERGENCY LANDING, ABOUT 20 MILES WEST OF ILIAMNA, AK. THE PILOT SAID THE ENGINE LOST POWER, SIMILAR TO FUEL STARVATION, AND WHILE ATTEMPTING AN EMERGENCY LANDING, THE LANDING GEAR WAS TORN OFF, STRUCTURALLY DAMAGING THE FUSELAGE. ACCORDING TO THE NTSB REPORT THE PILOT STATED THAT ACCORDING TO HIS CALCULATIONS, THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN 30 MINUTES OF FUEL REMAINING IN THE TANKS. THE PILOT RETURNED MY PHONE CALL 10-26-05 SAYING THAT HE HAD SENT THE NTSB A REPORT. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WITH THE NTSB FAXED A COPY OF THE PILOTS REPORT TO THIS INSPECTOR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC06LA001](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC06LA001), Oct 3, 2005: Cessna 185 (N9950X), Iliamna, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate preflight inspection, which failed to detect water-contaminated fuel, resulting in a loss of engine power during cruise flight, and subsequent in-flight collision with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
