## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PRIVATE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA O^ WAS RECEIVING FLIGHT INSTRUCTION FROM ^PRIVACY DA^ TOWARD AN INSTRUMENT RATING THROUGH A 141 FLIGHT SCHOOL, AMERICAN WINDS (AYKS). THE FLIGHT (N7768G) DEPARTED THE AKRON-FULTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND PROCEEDED TOWARD THAT AKRON VOR TO PRACTICE NAVIGATION. THE RADAR DATA INDICATES THAT N7768G REMAINED IN THE VICINITY OF THE AKRON VOR AT ALTITUDES BETWEEN 3300'MSL AND 1500'MSL AND APPEARED TO HAVE CONDUCTED A FEW 360 DEGREE TURNS AS WELL AS AN S-TURN. N7768G APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN HEADING APPROXIMATELY WEST-NORTHWEST (305 DEGREE HEADING) WHEN IT WAS INVOLVED IN A MID-AIR COLLISION WITH A LANCAIR (N235U) THAT WAS HEADING NORTH TOWARD PORTAGE COUNTY AIRPORT. THE MID-AIR OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 2:05PM LOCAL TIME ABOUT 1 MILE SOUTH OF THE AKRON VOR, THE ALTITUDE OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS BETWEEN 2300 AND 2500 FEET MSL, NEITHER AIRCRAFT WAS IN CONTACT WITH AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL AT THE TIME.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI06FA010](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI06FA010), Oct 14, 2005: Cessna 172L (N7768G), Rootstown, OH, destroyed, 4 fatal. Probable cause: The failure of both pilots to maintain an adequate visual lookout during cruise flight, which resulted in their failure to see and avoid each other and a midair collision.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
