## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT/REPAIRMAN FOR THIS EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT REPORTED THAT, AFTER REPAIRING A BRACKET ON THE ENGINE OIL COOLER AND REINSTALLING THE OIL COOLER ON THE AIRCRAFT, HE TOOK THE AIRCRAFT FOR A TEST FLIGHT. APPROXIMATELY 35 MINUTES INTO THE FLIGHT THE ENGINE STOPPED AND THE PILOT MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON US1 IN APEX, NC. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT OR PROPERTY. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION FOUND A MAJOR OIL LEAK ON THE ENGINE. THE MOST PROBABLE LOCATION OF THE LEAK WAS IN THE OIL LINE FROM THE OIL COOLER. THE REPAIRMAN STATED THAT HE THINKS HE MAY NOT HAVE GOTTEN THE FITTING TIGHT ENOUGH BECAUSE IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE WRENCH WAS RUBBING AGAINST THE OIL COOLER CASING, MAKING HIM BELIEVE THAT THERE WAS A LOT OF RESISTANCE IN THE LINE FITTING, AS IF THE FITTING WERE TIGHT. THERE WAS NO LOGBOOK ENTRY FOR THE REMOVAL, REPAIR, AND REPLACEMENT OF THE OIL COOLER AND ITS BRACKET.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
