## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE HELICOPTER PILOT ENCOUNTERED DETERIORIATING WEATHER CONDITIONS WITH LOW CEILINGS AND WAS BACK-TRACKING IN ORDER TO FIND AN ACCEPTABLE ROUTE TO THE EAST OR TO ELY, NV AIRPORT (ELY). AT APPROXIMATELY 200 FT AGL A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD, FOLLOWED BY A FLAME OUT OF BOTH ENGINES. AN EMERGENCY AUTOROTATION TO A LANDING WAS ACCOMPLISHED. HOWEVER, DURING THE TOUCHDOWN, THE RIGHT LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE TAIL BOOM PYLON WAS SEVERED BY THE MAIN ROTOR. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST LEANING ON THE RIGHT SIDE SUPPORTED BY THE ROTOR BLADES. THE AIRCRAFT WAS OPERATING IN PRECIPITATION IN THE FORM OF SNOW. FURTHER ANALYSIS OF THE ENGINE FAILURES IS IN PROGRESS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX06LA092](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX06LA092), Jan 18, 2006: Croman SH-3H (N612CK), Ely, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: the loss of power in both engines due to the ingestion of ice and snow. Also causal was the pilot's preflight and in-flight decisions to fly into areas of known and forecast moderate icing conditions…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
