## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING LANDING ON RUNWAY 2 AT NEW HAVEN AIRPORT, THE STUDENT PILOT FAILED TO PROPERLY FLARE, BOUNCED BACK INTO THE AIR, CAME BACK DOWN ON THE RUNWAY WITH THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT POINTED SLIGHTLY TO THE LEFT. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, THROUGH THE GRASS, ENDING UP IN A DRAINAGE DITCH. THE STUDENT PILOT WAS ON HIS SECOND SUPERVISED SOLO.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC06CA057](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC06CA057), Jan 22, 2006: Piper PA-28-161 (N9284A), New Haven, CT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's improper flare and inadequate recovery from a bounced landing, which resulted in a loss of aircraft control during landing and subsequent impact with a ditch.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
