## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JANUARY 28, 2006 AT APPROXIMATELY 1 PM EST, AIRCRAFT N9183Y DEPARTED LANCASTER PA (LNS) AND FLEW TO CAPE MAY NJ (WWD). AT APPROXIMATELY 4:30 PM ON THE SAME DAY, THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED WWD FOR A RETURN FLIGHT TO LNS. AT APPROXIMATELY 12 MILES OUT FROM LNS, THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. AIR TRAFFIC DIVERTED HIM TO SMOKETOWN PA (37PA). THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO MAKE THE 37PA AIRPORT AND THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED INTO A BARN TWO AND ONE HALF MILES NORTH WEST OF 37PA AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED. END.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC06LA064](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC06LA064), Jan 28, 2006: Piper PA-28-161 (N9183Y), Smoketown, PA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper pre-flight planning and improper fuel consumption calculations, which resulted in fuel exhaustion and a subsequent loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
