## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) INTERVIEWS WITH THE SURVIVING CREW REVEALED THAT BOTH AIRCRAFT WERE BEING FLOWN FOR A MAINTENANCE CHECK FLIGHT, CHECKING FUEL FLOW RATES, PRIOR TO DEPARTING FOR A DOD MISSION TO IRAQ THE FOLLOWING DAY. IT WAS AGREED UPON THE FLIGHT CREWS AND DISCUSSED PRIOR TO DEPARTING, THAT A PHOTO SHOOT WOULD BE TAKEN OF THE AIRCRAFT. A VIDEO CAMERA AND A DIGITAL CAMERA WERE RECOVERED FROM N372AC. ACCORDING TO THE SURVIVING CREW, N3735W FLEW SEVERAL PASSES AROUND N372AC. ON THE FINAL PASS, N3735W FLEW ALONG THE LEFT SIDE OF N372AC A FEW WIND SPANS APART. N3735W THEN ANNOUNCED THAT HE WOULD BE MAKING A DESCENDING RIGHT HAND TURN. THE LEFT WING OF N3735W IMPACTED THE LEFT WING AND ENGINE OF N372AC. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO CLIMB TO AVOID IMPACT. THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED AND PITCHED DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY BEFORE THE FLIGHT CREW REGAINED CONTROL. THE FLIGHT CREW OF N372AC DECLARED A MAY DAY WITH MADISON APPROACH CONTROL AND CONTINUED TO THE JUNEAU AIRPORT. THEY EXECUTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON RUNWAY 08 WITH A COMPLETE HYDRAULIC FAILURE AND PARTIALLY EXTENDED LANDING GEAR. THE AIRCRAFT OVERRAN THE END OF THE RUNWAY, COMING TO REST ABOUT 100 FEET FROM THE DEPARTURE THRESHOLD. FLIGHT CREW AND PASSENGER EV ACUATED THROUGH EMERGENCY EXITS. N3735W IMPACTED TERRAIN AND WAS CONSUMED BY FIRE. THE OUTBOARD 3/4 OF THE LEFT WING WAS FOUND A HALF MILE FROM THE MAIN WRECKAGE AND WAS NOT FIRE DAMAGED. THE LEFT AILERON WAS FOUND ON RUNWAY 08 AT THE JUNEAU AIRPORT WHERE N372AC HAD LANDED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI06FA077](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI06FA077), Feb 5, 2006: Short Brothers SD-360-300 (N372AC), Watertown, WI, substantial damage, 3 fatal. Probable cause: The other airplane's flight crew failure to maintain clearance while maneuvering during formation flight. Contributing to the accident was the decision of both flight crews to fly in formation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
