## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT REPORTED THE LANDING GEAR WOULD NOT LOCK IN THE DOWN POSITION. THE EMERGENCY GEAR PROCEDURES WOULD NOT HELP. PILOT DECIDED TO LAND IN THE DIRT TO THE SIDE OF RUNWAY 22 (RIU). AIRCRAFT STRUCK EARTH BERM APPROX. 100 YDS FROM RUNWAY 22. AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED. AN INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT WITH NTSB IS SCHEDULED FOR THE 14TH OR 15TH OF MARCH, 2006. THIS REPORT WILL BE AMENDED AS REQUIRED. (-23 AMENDMENT) 3/22/2006 - DETERMINED THE NOSE GEAR LIMIT SWITCH TO HAVE AN INTERMITTENT OPEN IN THE WIRE HARNESS THAT AFFECTED THE OPERATION OF THE NORMALLY CLOSED CIRCUIT OF THE SWITCH. ACCORDING TO THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM DIAGRAM FOR THE PA24-260 AIRCRAFT AND BASED ON THE POSITION AND MOVEMENT OF THE WIRE HARNESS, THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE LANDING GEAR MOTOR TO NOT RUN WHEN THE GEAR SELECTOR WAS PLACED IN THE DOWN POSITION REQUIRING USE OF THE EMERGENCY EXTENSION PROCEDURES. THERE WERE NO NOTED DEFECTS IN THE LANDING GEAR EMERGENCY EXTENSION SYSTEM.

## NTSB investigation

None matched to this report by aircraft and date. Search the NTSB's own records: https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
