## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT DEPARTED ELTON HENSLEY MEMORIAL AIRPORT, FULTON, MISSOURI, (FTT) ENROUTE TO SKY-GOFARMS AIRPORT (73MU) LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES NORTH OF FTT. THE PURPOSE OF THE FLIGHT WAS TO PRACTICE TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS AT THE SKY-GO AIRPORT. AS THE PILOT WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE THE FIRST LANDING ON SOD RUNWAY 27, HE ALLOWED THE AIRPLANE TO DESCEND TOO LOW DURING THE APPROACH. THE AREA ALONG THE APPROACH PATH JUST AHEAD OF THE THRESHOLD IS SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN THE TOUCHDOWN ZONE. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE WAS LOOKING OUT TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE AIRPLANE SINCE HE COULD NOT SEE OVER THE NOSE. HE MISJUDGED HIS POSITION ALONG THE APPROACH PATH AND ALLOWED THE LANDING GEAR TO STRIKE THE AREA BELOW AND SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL, CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO FLIP OVER NOSE FIRST AND COME TO REST UPSIDE DOWN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI06LA085](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI06LA085), Feb 22, 2006: Wheeler Pitts Special (N55MW), Fulton, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: The altitude/clearance not obtained/maintained during landing by the pilot. Contributing factors were the trees, the embankment, the runway length, and the reduced visual lookout during the approach.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
