## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N24065, EXPERIMENTAL HOMEBUILT, KR2S, DEPARTED LAWRENCE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT ON RUNWAY 23 AT APPROXIMATELY 08:09 ON 04/11/06. AN EYEWITNESS STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT FAILED TO GAIN ALTITUDE AND SEEMED TO BE LOSING POWER SOON AFTER IT TOOK OFF. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ONLY IN THE AIR FOR A FEW MOMENTS BEFORE IT CRASHED. ACCORDING TO THE OWNER/PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ THIS WAS ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED BEHIND A RESIDENTIAL HOME AFTER HITTING TWO OR THREE TREES IN NORTH ANDOVER MA AT 08:14 EDT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED AND THERE WAS NO FIRE. THE PILOT WALKED AWAY WITH MINOR CUTS AND BRUISES BUT WAS TRANSPORTED TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL FOR OBSERVATION AND TESTS. THE PILOT WAS THE ONLY PERSON ONBOARD THE AIRCRAFT. INSPECTORS STATEMENT: THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED THAT THE "ENGINE RPM FOR THE CHEVROLET CORVAIR ENGINE SHOULD BE AT 3200RPM STATIC BUT AT FULL POWER ON TAKE-OFF ROLL IT SHOULD BE AT 3600RPM". DURING HIS FIRST TAKEOFF THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ REPORTED "SOON AFTER TAKEOFF THE RPM STARTED TO ROLL BACK TO 2200RPM ON ITS OWN WITHOUT ANY INPUT FROM HIM." THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ COULD NOT REGAIN ANY RPM OR ALTITUDE SO HE PICKED OUT A SPOT TO LAND THAT WOULD AVOID ANY HOUSES ANDTRY TO PERFORM AN EMERGENCY LANDING." THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ REBUILT THE ENGINE HIMSELF AND IT HAD APPROXIMATELY 17.5 HOURS OF GROUND RUN TIME. PREVIOUS TO THIS THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ HAD ONLY TAXIED THE AIRCRAFT DOWN THE RUNWAY AND PERFORMED A FEW HIGH SPEED TAXI RUNS. HE ALSO CLAIMED THAT AT NO TIME DID THE AIRCRAFT HAVE ANY FLIGHT CONTROL PROBLEMS. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ IS 68 YEARS OLD.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC06LA092](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC06LA092), Apr 11, 2006: Michaud KR2S (N24065), North Andover, MA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A partial loss of engine power for undetermined reasons, during the initial climb, which resulted in a forced landing into trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
